About Dr. Yosh Jefferson
As a child, Dr. Jefferson had a fascination with faces. When he was 7 or 8 years old, he wanted to be a plastic surgeon to treat abnormal and unattractive facial features and make patients feel whole. But God had another purpose for him. He directed him to be a dentist. For over 35 years, he was a general dentist who took courses in Functional Orthodontics. Dentists who practice Functional Orthodontics are different than orthodontic practitioners who specialize in just straightening teeth. Dentists who practice Functional orthodontics use orthodontic appliances to change the shape and size of mouths (often making them wider) and to change the position of the upper and lower jaw to give patients a more beautiful facial profile. There are many general and pediatric dentists who offer Functional Orthodontic treatment. More and more orthodontic specialists are also offering Functional Orthodontics treatment. Dr. Jefferson strongly advises patients seeking orthodontic treatments to find practitioners who offer “Functional Orthodontics”.
Understanding Facial Beauty
In order to treat beautiful faces, the treating doctor needed to define facial beauty. Dr. Jefferson, therefore, embarked on a lifelong journey to understand facial beauty. There were so many obstacles that he had to overcome. First, there was the popular view that facial beauty was subjective...that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. That facial beauty could not be objectively defined. Second, there was the dogmatic view in the orthodontic community that there were different standards of beauty based on race, age, sex, etc. Third, there was an entrenched view that facial appearance, whether attractive or unattractive, is totally genetically controlled, and therefore, the treating doctors cannot change it. Dr. Jefferson went against all these concepts and developed a Universal Standard for facial beauty regardless of race, age, sex, etc. Facial beauty is intimately related to Divine Proportion.
The “Ah-Ha” Moment
In the beginning, Dr. Jefferson just concentrated on treating patients to beautiful facial profiles based on his Universal Standard of Facial Beauty. Treating a multitude of medical issues was not his primary concern. However, in treating patients to his Universal Standard of Facial Beauty, vast numbers of his patients came back for post-treatment visits and related how they used to have severe migraine headaches, sleep disorders, hearing issues, neck-back-shoulder pains, etc. And after his treatment, their symptoms were significantly alleviated. This was an “Ah-Ha” moment for Dr. Jefferson. He realized then that Facial Beauty is intimately related to Health. He went on to harmonize the face to alleviate other medical issues, such as ADD/Hyperactivity, seizures, Bell’s palsy in a preteen, poor academic performance in children, underdevelopment in children, etc.
Current Engagements
He is currently an associate faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, ranked as the No. 2 dental school in the nation as of 2025. More and more dental students are seeking Dr. Jefferson as their mentor, wanting to learn his treatment philosophy. In the future, Dr. Jefferson hopes to establish an educational program where doctors can be credentialed in CranioFacial Medicine.©
The genesis of the online consultation service. Dr. Jefferson retired from dentistry in 2016. However, friends and neighbors kept asking him for his professional advice. One of his daughter’s friends had children who had orthodontic issues. She asked him for his professional opinion. In looking at her daughter’s facial appearance, Dr. Jefferson was able to assess that she had breathing issues, her face and mouth were narrow, and her teeth were misaligned. He advised her to seek an orthodontist who practiced “Functional Orthodontics”. He suggested that she needed a Schwarz expansion appliance. The parents followed his recommendation, and this is her before and after expansion treatment with just the expansion treatment. No braces at this time. Note the dramatic facial aesthetic improvement.
Establishing a Craniofacial Medicine website
Essentially, by beautifying and harmonizing the face, treating doctors can also alleviate a multitude of medical issues. This is what Dr. Jefferson calls “CranioFacial Medicine”.© He registered the domain name, Craniofacialmedicine.com. He established a Craniofacial Medicine website. The purpose of this website is to educate the public and the healthcare profession on the intimate relationship between facial beauty and health. How to diagnose and treat facial disharmony. Offer online consultation services to the public and to other healthcare professionals. And to offer educational opportunities to healthcare professionals who wish to learn Dr. Jefferson’s treatment philosophy. He has written many professional articles and a book, Jefferson Cephalometric Analysis, and has lectured nationally and internationally.
Dr. Jefferson loved being a dentist. Whenever he lectures, he always mentioned that if there is such a thing as reincarnation, he would love to come back as a dentist again. He also realized that his life has always been guided by God. He is forever thankful for all the blessings that He has bestowed on him. Dr. Jefferson felt that he needed to give back all that dentistry has given him. He joined DDS program, Donated Dental Service, where he was to treat one patient who is financially disadvantaged at no charge every year. He also established the Phoenix Endowed Scholarship Fund for the financially disadvantaged dental students at Rutgers University School of Dental Medicine. In 2025, Dr. Jefferson opened up a Charitable Giving Account in 2025 to establish Phoenix Endowed Scholarship Fund for the financially disadvantaged dental students at University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.
Expansion Treatment Enhances Facial Beauty and Health
After the expansion treatment, Dr. Jefferson asked if the child had upper airway obstruction. Asked if she was a mouth breather. And asked if she is now able to breathe through her nose, sleep better, and concentrate in school better. The parents answered, “Yes!! Exactly!! She can breathe so much better. She also had tonsils and adenoids removed because she was snoring and had throat infections. All Around, a game changer!!
Dr. Jefferson offers an online consultation service. Please read his Online Consultation Informed Consent and Liability Release. He can help patients or their children, but he has no control over the treating doctor, who may or may not follow Dr. Jefferson’s advice. Therefore, those who seek Dr. Jefferson’s consultation service must acknowledge that Dr. Jefferson is not liable for any treatment results from other doctors’ treatments. Also, for Dr. Jefferson to offer his consultation service, those who seek his service must provide facial photos, dental photos, and a cephalometric radiograph, which can be obtained at an orthodontic practice or a dental school.
Caring mother’s question to Dr. Jefferson:
A mother once asked me during one of my presentations, “When you talk about facial beauty, don’t you think that you may hurt the feelings of those children and adults who are not beautiful?”
I thought that was a wonderful question, and this was my answer, “If I could not treat patients to beautiful faces, I would never discuss it. But I can treat children and adults and enhance and beautify their faces without surgery. Additionally, by beautifying their faces, I can alleviate major medical problems. As a mother, wouldn’t you want to know that there are treatments via functional appliance therapy to treat your child if he or she needs it?” Parents in the audience nodded their heads, yes.
